Take it Outside!

What is it? – Exciting Day of Environmental Activities for Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers

A day full of environmental activities, including:

Tree Planting;
Building picnic tables;
Tour of the fish hatchery; and
Other surprise environmental activities.

Where is it? – Glen Haffy Conservation Area, 19245 Airport Rd, Caledon

Glen Haffy Conservation Area’s hiking trails and vistas offer some of the most panoramic views in southern Ontario. Home to a trout pond stocked with rainbow trout, Glen Haffy also offers recreational fishers a great way to enjoy a summer afternoon, close to the city. This park is also home to a fish hatchery. Each year, thousands of rainbow trout are raised for stocking the ponds here and at Heart Lake Conservation Area. The proceeds generated by angling fees help fund the fish rearing program.

When is it? – Saturday, April 30, 2011; 9 am – 4 pm

Separate TRCA nursery tour and program May 7, 2011; 10 am – 2 pm

Brampton Community Tree Planting

When: Saturday, November 7, 2009. 9:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m

Where: Valleybrook Park (Where the Etobicoke Creek crosses Bovaird. Planting location is on the north side of Bovaird Dr)

Who: Venturers and Rovers

Cost: No charge

Join TRCA and the City of Brampton Scouts and Guides for a day of fun filled tree planting, where we will restore parkland along the Etobicoke Creek Trail and maintain birdboxes. Please dress for the weather as this event will run rain or shine. Equipment and refreshments will be provided.

Youth of the World Award

Background

The future of our small planet is threatened by many challenges:

· By 2025, 2 out of 3 people will not have enough water for their basic needs.

· A billion people do not have access to clean drinking water.

· Soil degradation affects a third of the world’s land.

· 375 km2 of forest disappear every day.

· Two billion people do not have access to electricity.

· 3.1 million people died from HIV/AIDS in 2002, 42 million are infected.

· Over the past years, numerous conflicts led to 10 million deaths.

In September 2002, one hundred-eighty-nine UN member organizations adopted the UN Millennium Declaration. This declaration refers to universal values that are also those of Scouting: freedom, tolerance, equality, solidarity, respect of nature, shared responsibility.

“We will spare no efforts to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected… We believe that the central challenge we face today is to ensure that globalization becomes a positive force for all the world’s people… For while globalization offers great opportunities, at present its benefits are very unevenly shared…”

As follow up to this declaration, the UN General Assembly adopted the following eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) and invited young people to act, debate and reflect on them:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2. Achieve universal primary education

3. Promote gender equality and empower women

4. Reduce child mortality

5. Improve maternal health

6. Combat HIV-aids, malaria and other diseases

7. Ensure environmental sustainability

8. Develop a global partnership.

To achieve these goals, the Youth of the World campaign was launched. It’s objectives are to help young people achieve:

* The ability to explain the main challenges of today’s world

* The ability to live and take action in an intercultural context

* A sense of solidarity and community spirit

* Autonomy and leadership

* An aptitude for developing and managing collective projects

Samac Open Archery Shoot

Where – Camp Samac, Oshawa ON

Cost – $5 per person

Open Archery competition open to Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Adults. Team and individual registration available. Trophies and Medals awarded at the end of the day.

High Point Camp 2010

Where - Goodyear Memorial Scout Camp, Orangeville

Who – Venturers (Scouts will also be attending camp)

Cost – $25 – $30 per venturer includes pizza lunch, program and crest

Potato Cannons, Obstacles, Bridge over the River Why?, Orienteering, The Great Egg-scope, Target Frisbee , 1812 at Fort Goodyear, Cardio Vascular Challenge, Combative Sports or “How to settle an argument, Beat the Clock, Treasure Hunt, The Triad, Badge Display Knot challenge, Silk screening, Scout on Stamps Display, Social, Campfire, Dance, Life Size Board Games, Touch Football, Relay, Scouts Own and many more to come.

Venturer Winter Survival Camp

Where – Camp Nemo.

Who – Venturers

Cost - $15 per person.

Hosted by the 31st Hamilton Company. The Venturer Motto is CHALLENGE! This is the weekend to live up to that. Live for 2 nights and 2 days like Survivor Man. Limited equipment allowed, pre-camp survival kit construction required.

We have changed the look a bit, and have added the new option of subscribing through email. Updates will now be sent directly to your email address. WAVE 2010 (Wellington Area Venturee Extravaganza)

Its time to get out your suits, open those violin cases and make people dance! WAVE is here again and we’re bringing the mob with us. Good Cops, Crooked Cops, Snitches and Crime Lords, come one and come all. With alll the old events and even some new ones, it’s an offer you can’t refuse.

When - Friday, January 8th to Sunday, January 10th, 2010.

Where – Barber Scout Camp at 733 Stone Road East in Guelph.

Who – Venturers

Cost – Registration is $20 per person (youth and advisors). A Tie (or other mobster-like item) will be included in the price for pre-registrants (payment received by Friday, December 18, 2008)

The theme for this WAVE will be MOBSTERS

There will be events in line with the Mobster theme, to be experienced Saturday. Some of them include: Cops and Robbers, Rum Running, Cement Shoe Races, Mobster Trivia, Themed Dance, and more wacky orienteering/fire lighting.

Dinner Saturday night will be a pot luck in Cuscoro House (depending on registration numbers). Costumes are strongly encouraged for the dinner as well as the dance.

All groups will be asked to come up with a song skit and cheer for campfire. Be creative!
